Consumers of Social Media and Importance of Understanding them
Undeniably, social media has become a major aspect of a huge percentages of the population's every day life. Social media is the new efficient method to communicate with people all over the world and can be accessed freely on many devices such as people's phones, laptops and tablets. The number of social media consumers is so significant covering billions of people globally.
As seen from this graph, Facebook dominated the social media market having over two billion consumers as of 2017 and to this date has consistently kept significantly high consumer numbers.
It is important to understand the consumers of these platforms and their wants and needs for the social media platforms. The demand for the wants of the consumers are consistently changing and not being able to keep up with the trends can cause a social media platform to lose popularity and in turn decrease the average monthly users that consume these platforms.
The general increase of social media users have plateaued for users of all age categories. However, as expected, the age group of individuals from the years of 18-29 have been seen to be the biggest consumers of social media consistently from 2005-2015. The source of the trend of decreasing popularity for social media usage can come from several reasons but the main reason that contributes to the decline is the platforms not being able to keep up with the changes in consumer behaviour and fitting to their wants and needs.
Similarly to other businesses, social media platforms have to adapt to the changes of the consumers in their market. The process of feedback is helpful through tools such as polls and surveys, however, may be redundant information and research if consumers are not answering with full thought and just answering to get the poll out of the way. A great method for identifying the needs and wants is through analytics to determine what the consumers use the most of, what they search up most and what functions of the social media platforms they use the most. This gives the social media businesses insight to the functions that are doing well for their platform and those that need working on.
